Dominating the foam revolution

Some of the most memorable Monarch achievements during the last decade .

Cast your mind back for a moment to the "cane and leather hockey era" which dated pre. 1987. Remember if you will the soggy leather gloves, twisting cane legguards, and steel toed kickers which gave sub standard protection. That was then, before the lightweight protection of foam goalkeeping equipment came about.

Do you recall the foam revolution of 1987 which brought about a whole new era of hockey?

1987 - Monarch invented the revolutionary patented design for foam kickers with a unique strapping arrangement. These were first introduced into the international circuit and were first used by Great Britain's Goalkeeper in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where Britain captured the Gold medal.

1989 - Monarch launched the first foam legguards on to the market to complement the already popular foam kickers. David Luckes and Val Hallam of England and Great Britain were very impresesed by the lightweight protection offered by Monarch's goalkeeping equipmentk which increased their mobility and they have continued to use Monarch equipment ever since.

1992 - Bronze at the Barcelona Olympic Games
Jo Thompson of England and Great Britain senior women's squad had a dream that she was going to win an Olympic medal and the success was following her switch to Monarch foam equipment. She felt the equipment helped her become the No:1 Ladies Goalkeeper and realised her ambition.

1995 - Monarch were the first company to implement the new Personal Protective Equipment Directive 89/686/EEC, which states that all hockey equipment must pass strict C.E. Regulations and carry the official CE mark. All our products are rigorously tested to ensure that they meet the highest standards for specific levels of play.

1996 -  Monarch created the first foam gauntlet which would pass the stringent tests to comply with the PPE Directive. This instigated a review of the F.I.H. rules which were then changed to allow foam Hand Protectors rather than gloves with individual fingers. The patented cage system makes our gauntlets the only ones to fully conform with both the rules of the F.I.H. and EEC Directive.

As you can see Monarch have been the driving force behind improving goalkeeper's protection and performance, shaping the way the game is played today. Virtually every top goalkeeper in the world today wears kickers deriving from our patented design, using the rebound to turn defence into attack. We pioneered the Save and Clear Technique using foam products to repel the attacks on goal and this has now been emulated by all other brands worldwide.

The launch of our new product range will provide you with streamlined looking products combined with excellent protection.

What will the goalkeeping equipment of the future look like?
